I am diamond Terran, I have played about 500 games in Starcraft 2 ( including BETA ). Before SC2 I played Brood War ( about 1k games ), Warcraft 3 ( about 100 games ). I switched from BW to SC2 when SC2 went into BETA. Few days ago i noticed that i far more like watching BW videos/replays than SC2 stuff. Nostalgia ? After thinking I can say NO. The answer is simple – BW games offer much more fun than SC2 games. Why ? In my opinion the reason why lies in design of UNITS. I mean not how they look, but the way how they can be used. I play Terran so i will describe just Terran units.
BARRACK :
Marine, Marauder, Reaper, Ghost. Four units, two designs. Really – even though marine can shoot air units, marauder have armor dmg bonus and reaper has jetpack instead stim they all are used the same and single way : Shoot, retreat, shoot again ( then retreat again if you survive

It is not interesting for player to use it also for spectator to watch it.
Ghost. If you say ghost, on 95% you mean EMP against protoss. Using EMP is not fun – ghost come, fire and then goes away. Protoss cannot do much here. In BW this mechanic was funnier – protoss can run away with arbiter, or cast stasis filed on the vessel. Or just cast stasis field or recall faster

It is like mini game in game. In SC2 there is not such mechanic ( or it is not working – feedback from templar ? )
FACTORY :
Hellion can be used only the same way as marine, marauder and reaper. Shoot, retreat. Compared to the vulture in BW it is poor. Vulture has two abilities – shoot on move and mines. Shoot on move is great - you can massacre a bunch of zergling or zealots without scratch. If you have skill or APM to do it. Here you can see how you are improving in the game : if you are novice, you will do almost nothing, if you mastered it, you can make bloodbath. Vulture mines are interesting not only terran point of view ( incredible damage if good layed ), but also from protoss and zerg point of view ( mine dragging ) and for spectator too. I don’t mind to remove this game mechanic in SC2, but I do if the mechanics is not replaced ( at least ).
Tank. Since marauders are in SC 2, the tank as a armored dmg dealer is not worth. Simply is not effective – so much gas, so immobile, small dmg. Its pity, because tank offer really different use compared to any unit in the game, it is fun to use it, it is fun to watch it as a spectator but…… not effective due to reasons written up.
Thor. Bigger and slower version of goliath. Goliath can chase after carries or mutas. Can be used as a counter to dropship play in TvT. Compared to this, Thor is effective only to mutas ( if zerg don’t do magic box ) and maybe as a tank in TvP. Not much fun – thor is mostly just sitting down and shoot until he is destroyed.
STARPORT :
Battlecruiser. I don’t use it. No one use it. Slow, expensive, but most important – it is just countered so easily – Viking, void ray, feedback + stalkers +storm, hydralisk. Nothing much to say

I like many thing in SC2. MBS, infinite unit group, autominig, smarter units, fresh looking graphics, matchmaking system etc. All I wanna say is : there is lack of game mechanics that would be fun to use and also, that’s important too, fun to WATCH. Something like in BW was vulture mines, interesting siege tank play, dark swarm, plague, irradiate or lurkers ….
